What the judge is actually scoring
The same things that decide whether a display reads from a moving car. A roofline that runs as one unbroken line rather than three different ideas. A palette held to one temperature instead of everything in the box. Layers, so the eye travels from the roof to the shrubs to the walkway. A focal point. Scale that suits the house. And whether the extension cords are doing their best to be invisible.
None of that requires spending more. Most displays that score in the fifties are one weekend of rearranging away from the seventies, which is what the judge's notes are for.
